Closiver - Injection for Sheep
Closiver Injection- Fluke and worm control for sheep
Around lambing time, the ewe experiences a decreased immunity, which can last for several weeks after she has lambed.聽 The consequence of this is that adult fluke and worms are not expelled from the stomach and intestine; in turn these continue to produce eggs which are then deposited onto the pasture in higher numbers.聽 To make matters worse, the ewe is also less capable of rejecting ingested infective larvae, and larval stages lying dormant (e.g. telodorsagia circumcincta and haemonchus contortus) in the ewe are now able to resume their development to adults.聽 As a result the adult burden within the ewe is significantly increased, and in turn her egg output onto pasture also rises.聽 This is known as the peri-parturient rise (PPR), and is particularly severe in animals bearing more than one lamb.
The immunity of the ewe recovers around weaning, up to six to eight weeks after lambing, which coincides with the lambs beginning to graze pastures. However, as the lambs have not yet developed an immunity of their own against internal parasites, and the pastures now may be highly contaminated, there is an added risk for gut worm and fluke infestation in lambs at this point.
For details on the precise timing of dosing to reach a compromise between reducing the risk to your lambs and reducing the potential for resistant worms on your farm, please approach your veterinary surgeon or SQP.聽
During the post-lambing period, use of a combination product to combat fluke and worms (for example, closantel and ivermectin) can be considered.聽
The ewes are likely to have been housed for a considerable period and therefore the population of fluke within the ewe will be maturing resulting in a low proportion of immature fluke.聽 Closantel kills adult fluke down to seven weeks of age.聽 In addition, the strategic use of closantel at this time of the year reduces the requirement to use triclabendazole; a flukicide to which there are already widespread reports of resistance.聽
The combined effect of closantel and ivermectin will result in a reduction of fluke and worm eggs being released onto the pasture at the beginning of the season.
Simple and effective treatment
Closiver Injection for sheep allows simple and effective treatment of both worms and fluke for at-risk sheep. It is suitable for use in pregnant and lactating ewes, working tups and fattening lambs. A meat withdrawal period of 28 days must be observed for sheep, and the product is not for use in sheep producing milk for human consumption. It is given by subcutaneous injection at a dose rate of 1ml per 25kg bodyweight. 聽Animals should be weighed and grouped according to bodyweight to avoid under or over dosing.
